The water features at NMAI were designed with the Native American design team to evoke the sounds and sights of natural waterways.
The formal fountain runs to the east to an ocular hole that removes water from the basin. The constructed wetland utilizes captured rainwater from the building roof and moves it though the natural planting areas allowing for bio-filtration of the wetlands water. A large subterranean cistern allows for storage, re-circulation and treatment of the water while keeping it in circulation.
